# Getting Current Version from Remote, Making Changes, and Releasing v3.0.0 (faq4)

## 1. Clone the repo (get current version from remote)

```bash
mkdir -p ~/projects
cd ~/projects
git clone ssh://intel145@209.182.212.74:2222/home/intel145/websites/gitrepo/git.git git
cd git
```

Verify:

```bash
git remote -v
git branch -a
cat VERSION
git describe --tags --always
```

## 2. Make your changes

```bash
# edit files, test
git add -A
git commit -m "Implement v3 features"
```

## 3. Mark this state as v3.0.0

```bash
./git-bump-version 3.0.0
```

This sets `VERSION` to `3.0.0`, commits, and tags `v3.0.0`.

## 4. Push everything to the remote server

```bash
git push origin main
git push origin --tags
```

## 5. Update the server’s working copy (if you use one)

```bash
cd /home/intel145/websites/apps/git
git checkout main
git pull origin main
git fetch --tags
```

Now the bare repo and server working copy both have v3.0.0.
